Charles Babbage, 19th Century English mathematician/engineer who designed the Analytical Engine, a forerunner of the modern electronic computer. Babbage was unsuccessful convincing his contemporaries of the importance of his work, which was largely forgotten for many years after his death (1871); this may have delayed the era of modern computing by several decades. |
